EPCC at ISC'24: Developing a Sustainable Future for HPC and RSE Skills – Training Pathways and Structures

8 May 2024

Organiser Weronika Filinger gives the background to this ISC'24 Birds of a Feather session.

This Birds of a Feather session (BoF) session marks another step towards making high performance computing (HPC) training more accessible. HPC and our community is constantly growing and diversifying, so not only do we need to educate and train new HPC practitioners, but we also need keep gaining and advancing our own skills.

Despite the quantity of existing training materials, developing HPC and research software engineering (RSE) skills can be challenging. Many professionals do not have enough time to learn new things, in the right context and in a way that makes them directly applicable to their current work. Finding the right training content also takes time and does not guarantee the desired skills will be obtained.

The HPC education landscape needs to be easier to navigate. Not only does the training content need to be more FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable), but we also need to create learning pathways that directly correspond to the training needs and job requirements of HPC community members, especially in the Exascale era.

Making professional skills development easier requires shifting from teaching topics in a linear manner toward concept-based learning pathways that better align with adult learning models (eg learning a specific skill to complete a specific task in a limited time frame). This BoF will explore what is needed to create a set of learning pathways useful to the community.

This session builds on previous events held at ISC’23 and SC23, and is supported by several projects and initiatives, including:

Anyone interested in HPC education and training – whether as a learner or educator - is invited to attend. The session will be held at ISC’24 on Wednesday, May 15 at 10am.
