I have been working on parallel computing for some 35 years, and joined EPCC in 1993. I am currently the Service Director for the UK’s national HPC facility, ARCHER2. In this role, I am responsible for ensuring that ARCHER2 delivers a high-quality service to all users.
Dr Alan Simpson
ARCHER2 Service Director

At EPCC, I have taken leadership roles in a number of national HPC Services: applications support team leader for the T3D/T3E service; HPCx Project Director; HECToR User Support and Liaison team leader; and ARCHER CSE (Computational Science and Engineering) Director. For ARCHER2, I am the Service Director with overall responsibility for ensuring a high-quality service for all users. I also helped set up EPCC's MSc in HPC, and was the PRACE work package for applications for well over a decade.
I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a BSc (1st class honours) in Mathematical Physics and, in 1991, completed my PhD in Computational Physics as one of the founding members of UKQCD, one of the UK's initial HPC Grand Challenge projects.
