EPCC at SC24: the Data Analytics, Visualization, and Storage track

11 November 2024

EPCC's Rosa Filgueira writes about chairing the SC24 Data Analytics, Visualization, & Storage track.

This year I had the privilege of serving as the Chair for the Data Analytics, Visualization, & Storage track, working alongside my co-chair Rafael Ferreira da Silva from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

This track curated a selection of research papers that showcase the latest innovations in data analytics, visualisation, and storage - all areas that are becoming increasingly vital in the high performance computing (HPC) landscape.

We received 34 paper submissions for our track, out of which 33 were invited for further review. After a thorough and rigorous evaluation process, our programme committee (PC) ultimately accepted six papers, resulting in an acceptance rate of 18.18%. Each of these papers was carefully evaluated to ensure  they represent the highest quality research and the most impactful advancements in the field.

Our track will feature two sessions at SC24.

  • High-Performance Compression and I/O Management (19 November) will present three papers that focus on innovative methods for optimising data storage and retrieval processes. These techniques are expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of data handling in large-scale computational systems.
  • Scientific Data Processing and Visualization (21 November) will feature three papers that tackle the challenges of efficiently managing and visualising vast amounts of scientific data, making it easier for researchers to derive meaningful insights from complex datasets.

One of the highlights of this experience has been working with our exceptional committee, which comprises 23 people from a diverse range of institutions, including government laboratories, academic institutions, and industry leaders from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, France, and Spain.

The committee members ranged from junior to senior researchers, with a balanced mix of first-time SC participants and veterans of the conference. Their combined fresh perspectives and expertise ensured that our review process was both thorough and insightful. Thanks to their dedication, everything ran smoothly, making the task of chairing this track relatively easy for both Rafael and me.

Overall, serving as Track Chair has been an enriching and enjoyable experience. It not only allowed me to engage with cutting-edge research but also provided a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with outstanding professionals in the field. I'm excited to see the impact these contributions will have at SC24 and beyond, as they push the boundaries of what's possible in data analytics, visualisation, and storage within HPC.
